Author Bruce A. Borders captured my attention in Over My Dead Body immediately with Jeff Blake being on the receiving end of a barrage of bullets on the first page. "And What are you going to do?" the worried woman asked nervously. "You can't stop them all. Those are cops!"Jeff Blake is threatened by the head of CPS that if he doesn't give him the inside information on investment trading, he will have Blake's three-year-old daughter removed from the home. Suddenly two police officers are dead along with a CPS worker. This story is every parent's nightmare. How easy it would be for someone to falsify records and suddenly your child is about to be taken away from you.
Mr. Borders takes on the moral dilemma of what a parent might do to save their child from being forcibly removed from its home when they know the charges are false. I have no idea what I would do had I been placed in the same position of character Jeff Blake. I don't think I could just sit back and allow my child to be taken from me.
The book is well written and the characters engaging. This book was a fast read for me. I just couldn't put it down. I wanted to know what happened in the next chapter and the chapter after that. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Border's books.

When a CPS official with money issues threatens Jeff Blake and then follows through by ordering police to take Blake's daughter into custody, Jeff protects his family --- against many cops. He survives but is charged with three murders. His wife is in shock and their daughter is put in foster care. By some irony, one of the nurses taking care of Blake in the hospital is related to the foster parents. Borders hooks the reader quickly to at the very least find out if this mother and daughter can be reunited and survive given the unlikely reunion with the father.
This is a look at the legal system, abuse of power, and manipulation that is well-written. Even when betrayal seems apparent there is hope and optimism for a fairy tale ending. A compelling read.
What a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat story this was! And Bruce knows all the legal jargon that helped me to understand the judicial process. It was easy to follow the characters and the writing was thoughtful and well-written. The plot was exceptional. It was a good read. Once I got into the story it was really hard to put it down because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. It is a triumph of good over evil. Good job Bruce. I recommend this book highly. I really do.
I started this book and finished it in one setting. I had to! Once I started reading, I had to finish so I could find out what happened...ignoring friends, losing sleep. I'm just warning you, I couldn't stop reading. I think the main reason was because i could actually relate to the plot. Most thrillers have plots that are too crazy and far-fetched for the average reader to relate to the main characters. But any parent could relate to this book. The premise seemed all too plausible for comfort.
One thing I really appreciated was the lack of foul language in this book. I believe a good author can tell a gritty story without writing explicit language in the dialogue.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes a great clean suspense book and doesn't mind losing sleep to finish it.
This is a very fascinating book, with a powerful story line. I couldn’t believe the things the Blakes had to go through, that someone could wield such powers over another, just to bully them into doing what they want. Mr. Clint Parkens came through as the ultimate bully. I was thinking, if he was that bad as a grown up, what could he has been like as a youngster. With all the havoc he caused, I did not read that he was remorseful, rather his twisted mind spurred him to dig deeper into the hole he found himself. What a twerp!
I enjoyed this read, and couldn’t put it down until the end, although, I must say that the style of writing left me a little bit wondering what a bad job the editor did. From the beginning to the end of the story, I encountered too many sentences staring with the “ing” word, and many also starting with “As”. These are things a good editor could have put right. I strongly recommend that the author should do a second editing of this fascinating book so that the book will earn it the high marks it deserves.
With Over My Dead Body, author Bruce Borders creates a situation that, though fictional, certainly carries frightening potential in the real world.
When financial adviser Jeff Blake refuses to divulge insider information with the director of the local Child Protective Services, it’s Blake’s own child who suffers the consequences. How far would a parent go to protect his/her child from a corrupt system? Blake goes all out, leaving damage in his wake and uncertainty in his future.
Bruce Borders has written an intriguing story filled with twists and turns reminiscent of old-fashioned hard-boiled thrillers. This is one of those books that is difficult to put down, and will ultimately force readers to ponder the obvious question “What if this happened to my family?”
Well written, and well worth a read
I don't write many reviews although I read at least one book a week but this one was so hard to finish I thought I would pass along my thoughts. First off I get why the father got upset and went over the line but grabbing a shotgun and shooting was not the best choice to me (but I might have done the same). The biggest problem I had was the parents talk back and forth about what the nurse's name was and never asked why she was giving them all that money for their expenses and paying the hospital and lawyer bills. Come on really, that was something so simplistic that it blew my mind and made me so mad at them every time they would say well let's not upset her by asking her name and when it was close to the CPS agents, it never crossed their mind.
I guess this book shows how the court system really works and that there is a lot of government so it wasn't a complete waste of time but it wasn't something I could recommend.
